SAIA Education Project

SAIA Parent Education Project Survey

Scottish Attachment in Action and our partners are working on an Education Project which is looking at schools who show they love and care for their pupils. We want to understand and ‘map’ what schools do across Scotland so that we can help improve the experience for you, your children and their teachers.

We are looking for responses from parents and families with children of school age.
The questions arise from the output of research interviews undertaken as part of this Education Project and they also reflect ambitions within The Promise [www.thepromise.scot].
SAIA Young Person Education Project Survey

We are also looking for responses from young care experienced people (aged 16+).

The surveys should take less than 10 minutes to complete. Most questions have a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ option which you are asked to choose.  But there are also important opportunities in the text boxes for you to tell us more, if you wish.
Attachment Informed and Trauma Sensitive Practice for Learning and Teaching

Project Launch May 2020

Scottish Attachment in Action (SAIA) is excited to announce the launch of a new project to identify integrated attachment informed and trauma sensitive practice for learning and teaching (nursery to further/higher education).

As many of you may know, SAIA has worked with and in support of education across Scotland for several years.  In October 2019, in partnership with Sir John Timpson, SAIA brought together around 50 practitioners with expertise and passion for education and attachment theory and practice from across Scotland.

The event was highly successful with those attending (professionals, parents, carers and care experienced) sharing their innovations and experiences. One of the key outcomes was to continue this collaboration. We planned to invite the folk who attended  the event  back together in the spring – but then the virus struck.  Initially resigned to postponing our plans we quickly recognised the acute need identified had not subsided and we sought to adapt and push on!

We have now established a ‘virtual’ Project Group drawn from those invited to the October lunch, and whilst we have all found not being in the one room challenging at times, there has been a patient and generous spirit from members of the Project Group, to make it work. The Project Group will also be supported by a number of ‘critical friends’ and we hope informed by as broad a coalition of attachment informed educational practitioners as wish to influence the way forward.  Our ambition is and will continue to be shaped by conversation throughout the Project.  Broadly we envisage collecting and developing practical approaches to attachment theory across education within the context of Scottish Government Policy.

The first big question for us was quite simply, ‘where to start?’ And it made sense to return to those who participated in October and to collect from them (or their nominee) examples of attachment informed and trauma sensitive practice happening across all education sectors of Scotland. In ‘mapping’ the collected and collated data we should begin to understand the practice picture in Scotland, and that analysis will inform our next steps.  The exercise also allows SAIA to build on previous research undertaken in partnership with CELCIS for the Scottish Government ‘Attachment Matters for All - An Attachment Mapping Exercise for Children's Services in Scotland’ (2012).

So, we have an exciting summer ahead, and will keep everyone up to date with the Project as it develops over the coming months.  In the meantime, if you wish to know more about the Project or offer support please do not hesitate to contact our Maggie McManus, our Development Manager, [email protected]
